DEALING WITH REGULAR POWER OUTAGES CAN BE EXTREMELY FRUSTRATING.

The current electricity crisis and rising costs of utilities are providing major incentives for homeowners to take their properties off the grid - either partially or fully.

Homeowners looking to unshackle themselves from Eskom's erratic supply and surging electricity tariffs are thus increasingly turning towards solar-powered systems.

It is estimated that South Africa's electricity tariffs have increased by 300% over the last decade, while renewable energy is becoming more affordable, with the cost of solar dropping by 90% since 2000. Energy experts say municipalities still have many details to iron out regarding the purchase of privately produced power, but the City of Cape Town is leading the charge through trial and error. In 2017, the City revised its SSEG regulations and a year later intensified its registration process; all energy systems which aim to feed energy back into the grid needs to submit an SSEG application. Once registered the City of Cape Town offers a reverse feed tariff meaning that a household can sell excess energy back to the grid and recoup costs.

Not only will homeowners benefit from the installation of generators, invertors, solar power, water tanks, and boreholes while living in their homes, but when it comes to selling one day, one will realise additional value for the home as more & more buyers are searching for homes that offer such off-grid features.
